Documentation and Digitization
The introduction of computer-aided documentation in museums, offices for monument conservation and other institutions demands a great deal of attention and experience. This is why Foto Marburg offers everything necessary for setting up and successfully running and administering inventory with the support of electronic data processing, from consultancy to choosing and installing the hardware and software, to training the staff, up to data maintenance.
The price of the above services depends on the intentions of the client. If the image archive is commissioned to set up a long-term cooperation scheme and to connect the contractor to the DISKUS Network of organizations which set up a large, joint database by way of Foto Marburg (Image Index of Art and Architecture), a charge will be made for the net amount of any sizeable expenses incurred. If you have any questions, please contact the Cataloguing and Documentation Technology Department.
In 1981, Foto Marburg began to create computer-aided catalogues to make accessible its photographs and the works of art and architecture depicted in them. In the course of time, this has developed into a method of cataloguing mobile works of art and taking inventory of architectural monuments which is used in image archives, offices for monument conservation and museums, as well as at universities and other research institutes. It consists essentially of three elements:
- the regulations of the Marburg Information, Documentation and Administration System (MIDAS),
- sufficiently powerful database programs and
- a data pool which makes large numbers of works of art and architecture accessible and decisively facilitates a uniform method of cataloguing by achieving the critical mass necessary for ensuring data consistency.
Foto Marburg offers users of the Marburg Method, as well as all others who are interested in using computers in the field of art history, a free assistance and consultancy service. If you are interested, please make your requirements known to the Cataloguing and Documentation Technology Department.
