At the focus of the research conducted by the Deutsches Dokumentationszentrum für Kunstgeschichte Bildarchiv Foto Marburg is the history, practice and theory of how visual cultural assets are passed on, especially the accompanying transformation process as it relates to the media, the conditions of storing knowledge in visual form, and the significance to society of remembering visual culture.
These are also connected to general questions concerning image media, especially in modern times, to the conditions and possibilities of the interpretation of visual testimony, and finally, to the basic question regarding the status and purpose of that which must be understood as "art".
